What is Spinal Stenosis ?

Spinal stenosis is a term used to describe a narrowing of the spinal canal.

The narrowing may not initially cause any symptoms. however, the narrowing may progress to cause squeezing (compression) of the spinal nerves.

Usually, as part of the normal ageing process, degenerative changes occur in the spine,

especially in the lower back and neck which often lead to pain.

Symptoms of spinal stenosis typically progress over time, as nerves become more compressed and you may experience weakness in the arms or legs, lower back pain while standing or walking, balance problems or even numbness in your legs or buttocks.

Of course many spinal issues tend to have similar symptoms which can complicate diagnosis which is why it is essential to have your condition correctly diagnosed by your GP healthcare professional before seeking out treatment options.

Sports Massage Therapies can be an effective option for pain management for people suffering with spinal stenosis as it can help improve circulation and cellular exchange in and around the area of discomfort, leading to a reduction in the inflammation in the surrounding tissues whilst prompting the release of endorphins (Hormones secreted within the brain and nervous system which cause an analgesic effect)
